Multiple Strikers Champions at Memorial Day Tourney
The Oak Park-River Forest Strikers club dominated the Park Ridge Memorial Day
tournament, winning three championships outright and just missing two other
titles.
Strikers girls and boys U12 Orange teams won the overall tournament
trophy at U12. The girls defeated host Park Ridge 2-1 in the final on
goals by Megan Aeschleman and Tricia Henegehan. Jamie Heneghan, Tamae
Douglas and Leah Silver scored in preliminary victories.
Boys U12 defeated PNA Patriots 5-2 for the championship behind goals
from David Senk (2), Fedia Kourbatov, Justin Bruce and Eric Tynybekov.
Boys U13 defeated Wilmette Wings 2-0 to win the white bracket championship,
reaching the final with a 3-2 win over United FC, 3-0 win over Skomor
and 4-4 tie against Alliance.
 U14 girls shut out three top-rated teams to reach the final -- 3-0
over Tinley Park, 2-0 over Arlington Aces, and 1-0 over Park Ridge --
before losing 1-0 in the title game against Park Ridge. Girls U12 Navy
had an outstanding tournament, defeating Team Evanston 4-0 and reaching
the championship game before losing a 2-1 heartbreaker and heading home
with the runner-up trophy.

U12 BOYS!!
The
Oak Park-River Forest Strikers boys U12 team went undefeated to win the
championship of the top bracket at the Hinsdale Hawks Cup on May 8-9. Strikers
Izzy Coronado, Will Dunne, David Senk and Matt Kleinkopf led the scoring,
as the Strikers defeated Bartlett Hawks 5-1, Legends 3-1 and Typhoons 2-0
to win a spot in the championship round. In the final, the Strikers defeated
highly-rated Spartans FC 2-1 for the championship. The boys are coached
by Strikers Director of Coaching Murray Findlay and assistant Steve Gillman.  
U18's RUNNER-UP
AT DISNEY SHOWCASE
The OPRF Strikers
U18 girls soccer team finished runners-up at the Disney Soccer Showcase
in Orlando over Presidents Day weekend, falling just short, 1-0, against
Celtic Storm Premier, a top team from Utah, in the final.

Earlier, the Strikers defeated FC
America from Florida 1-0 and took a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the
Cayman
Islands National team behind
Alex Hammond's game-winning goal. The Caymanians were preparing for their
CONCACAF International games against the national teams from the USA,
Mexico and Canada. Strikers Director of Coaching Murray Findlay, who
coached the team in Florida, said "I am very proud of the girls
not only for their performance on the field but also for their exemplary
behavior off it. It was a great way to end the season by a fine team." The
Strikers U17 team, coached by Renee Vai, had a solid showing in their
Disney bracket, winning one out of three games.

Congratulations to Anita Balciunas on college signing
Three-year Strikers goalkeeper Anita Balciunas recently signed a letter
of intent to play for the Saint Xavier University Cougars in Chicago.
Anita was the starting goalkeeper on the undefeated Strikers u17 team
coached by Renee Vai two years ago, and in 2008 and 2009 was the standout
goalkeeper on the Strikers "A" level U19 team. She will graduate
from Riverside-Brookfield H.S. this spring and plans to major in special
education.
"
Anita has been outstanding in our program," said Strikers Director
of Coaching Murray Findlay, "and I know she will be a terrific
player at Saint Xavier."
Fifteen players from the Strikers girls high school program have gone
on to play college soccer in recent years at the Division I or III
levels. 
USA Player of
the Year Carli Lloyd Visits Strikers
Chicago
Red Stars Ella Masar and Carli Lloyd visited Strikers camp on August 19
to talk about their soccer careers and sign autographs. Lloyd was the USA
2008 Player of the Year and scored the gold medal-winning overtime goal
for the US vs. Brazil at the Beijing Olympics. The visit was arranged by
Strikers coaches Alyse LaHue, Greg Zaskowski and Director of Coaching Murray
Findlay.

Strikers
U19 team wins Palatine Celtic Cup
Led
by coach Murray Findlay, the U19 won the prestigious Palatine Celtic
on Labor Day, one of the top tournaments in the Midwest. Alex Hammond
and Shelby Cozette scored in the 2-0 victory over Alliance SC (Mich.)
in the final, and Lizzie Cusick and keeper Anita Balciunas anchored the
defense. Strikers outscored the opposition 10-1 in the tournament.

Strikers
girls U12, coached by Dan Cross, won the Schaumburg Soccerfest White
Division Aug. 28-30, 2009, winning four straight games by combined score
of 11-2 and defeating Mundelein 4-1 in the final. Strikers girls u10,
coached by Renee Vai, also had a great tournament, winning three straight
before taking the runner-up trophy after a 1-0 loss in the final.

U10 and U14 boys, spring 2009 champs
Tip of the
hat to the Strikers u10 boys team (shown in photo) for tying Euro for first place
in the spring 2009 NISL Silver-2 division, and to our u14 boys team for winning
the spring 2009 championship of the NISL's Gold-2 division. The U14 boys team
was led by coach Mick O'Malley and assistant coach John Hayden and featured players
Ryan Ebersole, Sam Walder, Cole Hayden, Jacob Peterson, Rafael Avcioglu, George
Farrell, Ricardo Casteneda, Gio Gorgoni, Sam Srajer, Jeffrey Cofsky, Graham Hawthorne,
Jordan Bruce, Sam Dull, Graham Lehman, Gianluca LoCasto, Kevin Rogers, Edward
Taylor and Patrick Yerkes. Good luck this fall in high school soccer, boys!

U11 Girls Win Title
The
U11 girls Orange team defeated Eclipse Select 7-1 to win the championship
of the Illinois Women's Soccer League C-West division with a 5-1-2 record.
The Strikers outscored their opponents 27-11 for the season. Team members
include Megan Aeschleman, Gabby Gorgoni, Alexa Gillman, Esther Ramsay,
Leah Silver, Katie Warner, Cami Jordan, Tricia Heneghan, Demi Philosophos,
Jamie Heneghan, Eden Miller, Luci Lussier and Maya Trinka. Coaches are
Lloyd Costello and Rich Lussier.

to Unbeaten U13 Orange girls
The
Strikers girls u13 Orange soccer team defeated Naperville Wildcats 3-1
on June 15 to win the Illinois Women's Soccer League AB-division championship.
The Strikers finished 7-0-1 for the spring, their second consecutive
undefeated season. Isabela Escalona, Ruby Gonzalez and Natalie Blamires
scored in the title clincher, with assists from Emma Dunne, Lauren Wilkes
and Blamires. For the season, Strikers outscored their opponents 20 goals
to 6. The defense was anchored by keepers Erin Schrobilgen and Dunne,
and defenders Caroline Coughlan, Hannah Silverman, Gabrielle Barkidjija,
Elana Abrams, Kate Spittle, and Kristen Laible. Midfielders Tess Trinka,
Wren Osler, Tessa Saraceno and Meredith Blatner, and forward/mid Mara
Logerquist all had outstanding seasons. Coaches were Dan Cross and asst.
John Barkidjija, team manager Bernadette Diaz.

U19 Orange girls!!
Strikers
U19 Orange girls finished runner-up at the Las Vegas Mayors Cup on
Feb. 14-15, 2009. The team is coached by Murray Findlay, one of the few
area
coaches with a national "A" license and a former Scottish national
team U18 player. The Strikers U19 Orange team has played in one of the
top two competitive leagues in Ilinois every year since 2001 (IWSL "A" or "AB" U19
division), including two undefeated championship seasons, and has produced
innumerable high school all-conference players and Div. I and Div.
III college players.


TWO LEAGUE TITLES
FOR STRIKERS BOYS
The Under-8 and
Under-9 Orange boys teams from Oak Park-River Forest Strikers won
their Northern Illinois Soccer League fall
2008 division championships, both with 9-1 records. The U8 boys won
the Silver North division, outscoring their opponents 47 to 9 for the
season behind coach Elliot Grey. Every
player on the team contributed to the scoring, including Brody
Bliss, Misha Barkidjija, Grant Kindler (who scored a hat trick),
Zak Vergotine (also a hat trick), Simon Miller, Matthew Hawthorne,
Jacob Sklar, Tomas Senk and Ryan Jackson (9 goals for the season).

The U9 boys won the Bronze North division. Scoring and strong
contributions were spread across the team, which included Ben
Srajer, Joe Pickering (hat trick), T.J. Hager, Joey Reyes, Jacob
Sajdera (two hat tricks), Max Wigfield, Bobby Iwashima, Stone
Conner (hat trick), Cameron Duncan, Finnr Elsmo, Sam Klevgard and
Nathan Sykes (9 goals for the season). The boys outscored their
opponents by 53 goals for to 28 goals against. The team was led
by coach Murray Findlay, the Strikers' overall Director of
Coaching.


TWO UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONS
The Oak Park-River
Forest Strikers girls Under-12 and Under-13 orange teams both went
undefeated to win their fall 2008 IWSL
division championships.
The U12 girls posted
a perfect 10-0 record, completing a turnaround from their first season
at u9 age when the team was
winless. Led by coach Lloyd Costello, the team outscored its
opponents by 35 goals to 9 for the season. Needing a win in
their final game to finish unbeaten, the Strikers defeated
Arlington Aces 7-2, showing their usual balance and chemistry as
seven players scored one goal apiece.

The U13 girls finished with 8 wins, no losses and two ties,
outscoring their opponents by a whopping 33 goals scored to just 1
for the opposition all season. Goalkeepers Emma Dunne and Erin
Schrobilgen and defenders Kate Spittle, Hannah Silverman, Elana
Abrams and Kristen Laible contributed to the stingy defense.
Caroline Coughlan and Isa Escalona sparked the offense with four
assists each, and goal scoring was distributed throughout the team
including Lauren Wilkes with 7 goals, Gaby Barkidjija with 6 and
Wren Osler with 5. Tess Trinka, Meredith Blatner, Tessa Saraceno
and Mara Logerquist controlled the midfield, and forwards Ruby
Gonzalez and Natalie Blamires gave the team offensive pop.

Way
to go, U10 girls and U13 girls -- both teams ran the table with perfect
records to win their brackets at the Schaumburg Soccerfest August 23-24,
2008.


The Under-13 Orange
girls shut out the Lemont Raiders and Arlington Aces 3-0 apiece behind
goalkeepers Erin Schrobilgen and
Emma Dunne and defenders Gabrielle Barkidjija, Hannah Silverman,
Elena Abrams and Meredith Blatner. The Strikers advanced to the
championship with a 4-2 win over Schaumburg Tsunami led by Mara
Logerquist, before shutting out the Hinsdale Hawks 7-0 in the
title game. Seven players scored goals in the tournament,
including Tess Trinka (4), Dunne and Natalie Blamires with 3 each,
Caroline Coughlan and Isabella Escalona with 2 each, Schrobilgen,
and Lauren Wilkes. Players assisting goals included Wren Osler,
Ruby Gonzales, Kate Spittle, Kristen Laibel and Tess Saraceno to
close out regulation play and advance to the championship.
The Under-10 Orange
girls were also perfect, defeating Johnsburg 5-4, McHenry Vipers 2-0,
and Glen Ellyn Raiders 5-0 in the regular
bracket, with three goals each scored by Grace Huettel, Quinn
Berleman-Paul and Ella Rossa, and one each by Gianna Guerino,
Ellie Mann and Sydney Lupo. In the championship game, Strikers
defeated Crystal Lake Premier 2-1 as Berleman-Paul and Corrine
Joss scored.
The Under-11 Orange
girls were runners-up in their group, making the championship final
wih a thrilling 2-0 win over Glen Ellyn
Raiders before falling to Ela Blue in the final.

TRIPLE TOURNAMENT CHAMPS
Three Oak Park-River
Forest Strikers teams won championships at the Park Ridge 2008 Memorial
Day Tournament. U9 Girls Orange won four straight games and defeated
Glen Ellen Lakers 3-1 in the title match, with goals contributed during
the tourney by Blair Ripley, Quinn Berlemen-Paul, Grace Huettel, Kate
Richards, Ella Rossa, Gianna Guerino and Kelli Quick and Ava Trogus.
 Girls U10 needed at least a 3-0 victory in their final round-robin game
to qualify for the championship and they got it, scoring three times
after a 0-0 halftime tie to make the final, where they defeated the Wilmette
Wings 3-1 for first place. The U11 girls orange, coached by Strikers
Director of Coaching Murray Findlay and Melissa Donile, completed the
trifecta with a championship in their bracket.

Five of eight Strikers
teams entered in the Park Ridge tournament made the championship round.
Boys U14 Orange made the championship
game in
the top flight of the tournament before falling to Berwyn Blazers, behind
goals by Ryan Huettel (3), David Leitson, Ryan Ebersole and Hunter Standen
and assists from Michael Woulfe, Standen and Huettel. Pete Knight’s
Boys U11 Orange also made the championship round in their group before
finishing fourth overall. Several Strikers teams also won their penalty
kick shootout competitions.

U11 Orange posts whole-tournament shutout
Congratulations to the U11 Strikers Orange team for winning the Park
Ridge Memorial Day 2008 Tournament Championship. They won four games
with no losses and were not scored upon -- the only team in the tournament
that did not allow any goals. Special recognition to the defensive unit
(Emily, Maureen, Sammy) for not allowing any goals. Nice work to coaches
Murray Findlay, Ken Gaebler and Melissa Donile.
 
Second
Strikers team has perfect 10-0 fall season
The Strikers U16 Navy girls team won the IWSL U16-C division with a perfect 10-win,
no-loss season after defeating the Oak Brook Hawks 7-1 on November 11.


U19
GIRLS 100% RECORD
The Oak Park & River Forest U19 Girls "Orange" team finished
the Fall 2007 league season with a record of 10 wins and no losses. Comprised
of area players from Oak Park & River Forest, Fenwick, Trinity and
Francis Parker high schools, and playing at one of the highest levels of
the Ilinois Womens' Soccer League, the Strikers 'ran the table', scoring
33 goals while conceding only 9. Leading the scoring were Tasia Race and
MacKenzie Kula (7 goals apiece), with Casey Blaha and Molly Sutton chipping
in 4 apiece, while midfielders Alex Neumann and Blaha led with 4 assists
each. Playing in a 3-5-2 for most of the season challenged the Strikers'
defense, but fullbacks Gillian Sullivan-Bing, Melissa Manus, Sweeper Grace
Brofman, stoppers Jill Coleman and Emily Sher, and goalkeeper Alex Chapman
were equal to the challenge. Pacing a possession-oriented midfield were
Gina LaRose, Michelle LaRose, Marie Fourman, Blaha and Neumann. Scoring
pressure was provided by forwards Kula, Sutton, Claire Spitzer and midfielders
Race and Janel Brown. Coaching the team for a second consecutive successful
season was Murray Findlay, the Strikers Director of Coaching. "I was
really pleased with the team's improvement and commitment throughout the
season, especially considering the turnover in the roster from last season.
The girls' final game was the best they played all season" said
Findlay.


STRIKERS
HELP KICK CANCER
U12
player Gabrielle Barkidjija was recognized on the field at halftime
of the Chicago Fire game vs. NY Red Bulls on September 15 as the top
fundraiser in the Strikers Kicks For Cancer juggling competitition.
Gabrielle raised $500, leading a club-wide effort that generated about $10,000
in all toward the fight against childhood cancers.

Ex-Striker Claire Goldenberg Stellar at Iowa
Oct. 2006 -- University of Iowa junior defender Claire Goldenberg was
named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week, the first time a Hawkeye
player received this national honor.
Claire, who is from River Forest, stood out on the Strikers for many
years and earned all-state honors for the OPRF High School Huskies. She
won the BuzzElite award for scoring the winning goal for Iowa in double-overtime
against No. 21 Indiana and anchoring the Hawkeye defense from the central
defender position in two shutouts against top 25 teams. Goldenberg also
made a clutch defensive stop late in the second half against Purdue to
preserve Iowa's second straight shutout and help the Hawkeyes to their
first unbeaten Big Ten weekend since 2002.
